Only one SRT8 model for 2011

Chrysler’s SRT8 Lineup Shrinks to Just One Model for 2011

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Picture

Saying it intends to focus on the “meat of the market,” Chrysler confirmed  that it is shrinking its high-performance SRT8 lineup to a single model. The Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 — at one time crown jewels in the lineup — have been deleted.

  • There will be no 2011 Chrysler 300C SRT8 or 2011 Dodge Charger SRT8, Chrysler confirmed on Thursday.
  • The only SRT8 product for the new model year will be the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.
  • Chrysler said it wanted to “attack the meat of the market” with the new strategy.
  • “Based on our launch cadence, we wanted to attack the meat of the market,” said Jiyan Cadiz, Chrysler spokesman “(The SRT8 models) traditionally have been the most expensive (in the lineup).”

    Chrysler sold 1,850 300C SRT8 vehicles and 688 Dodge Charger SRT8 vehicles in 2010.

The 2010 Chrysler 300C SRT8 started at $45,615, including a $750 destination charge. For the 2011 model year, the top-of-the-line 300 model will be the 300C AWD, which starts at $41,145, including an $825 destination charge.

Chrysler made the 2011 300 series pricing announcement on Thursday, noting that the lineup will feature just four models: the Chrysler 300, 300 Limited, 300C and 300C AWD. Also deleted for 2011 is the Chrysler 300 S, a midrange model. The base 2011 Chrysler 300 starts at $27,995, including destination. The base 2010 Chrysler 300 started at $28,010.

The 470-horsepower 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is now the only SRT8 model offered by the automaker. It starts at $45,080, including shipping and a gas-guzzler tax.

The SRT acronym stands for Street and Racing Technology.

    Tribute to Dale Earnhardt

NASCAR marks 10-year annivesary of Dale Earnhardt’s death at Daytona 500

It was 10 years ago today that racing legend Dale Earnhardt Senior died while competing at the Daytona 500. It’s no secret that not every motorsports afficianado is a fan of the NASCAR scene, but there’s no denying the outright skill and presence that racers bring to the game both on and off the track. Nowhere was that more evident than with Earnhardt, who sprang from a long-line of circle track racers. Even if series fans rooted for a different driver, they respected Earnhardt for his down-to-earth nature and old-school approach to racing. When Earnhardt was behind the wheel, it was clear he wasn’t there to make friends or play nice. He was there to win.

While Earnhardt’s death was a tragedy on many levels, we can’t help but feel that NASCAR lost more than an icon when he passed. Today’s field is populated by overly polished, nameless media machines that lack the heart and human emotion that the old-timers brought to the table. Maybe that’s why we just can’t bring ourselves to flop down in front of the TV for 500 laps anymore.

For an excellent (and tear-jerking) retrospective on The Intimidator’s fatal accident, check out Dale Earnhardt’s Last Ride from ESPN.

Dodge is spicing it up with the new Durango Heat!

    2011 Dodge Durango Heat

    2011 Dodge Durango Heat

Dodge has lit up its new Durango Heat at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. The mighty crossover wears the fancy dress of the R/T model, but comes without thirsty 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under the hood. Instead, buyers can expect to find the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 behind the headlights churning out 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That’s an extra five ponies over the typical V6 Durango, and combined, Dodge says that the machine should be capable of 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. That’s a jump of two and three mpg, respectively, over the Hemi-powered R/T.

Outside, the Durango Heat wears the same front fascia, side skirts and monochrome treatment as the more powerful crossover, and it even comes packing the same low-slung suspension and 20-inch wheels. Don’t expect to find seating for seven indoors, though. Dodge has ditched the third row to save a few pounds to increase both performance and fuel economy.

If you like what you see, expect to shell out $30,295. All-wheel drive guise will set you back an additional $2,000.
